firefox won't quit even after selecting force quit & can't restart/shutdown

Version 3.5.13 would not force quit had to shut down whole system after multiple attempts, the computer finally shut down. Then, upon turning the Mac back on, a restored Firefox session opened plus a new Firefox window opened. "Only one copy can be open at a time" FF will not quit.
