If I select File | Save in Thunderbird when composing a message, where does Thunderbird put the file? The saving notification flashes past too quickly for me to read, and I can't find it in the usual email folders.

Try 'Save As' instead to see where it goes to.

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. If you save a message as a file, and you don't remember where you put, just save it again, and pay attention of the storage location. You may also search for the file name of the 'lost' message.

Furthermore, in your Settings you can specify a default storage location, or always being asked where to save files.
