Installing the "Adblock Plus" extension and a requisite filter subscription such as "Easy List" would help prevent similar problems. Don't know where you picked it up, so if you could could be more specific it would help others -- and it seems you almost have a handle on where it came from -- as I see someone filed a bug report and bugzilla is probably not a good place to post such vague problems to developers when more information can probably be gathered from other users here. I definitely see other having problems not necessarily in or limited to Firefox because they don't say.

Many virus protectors and gratuitous warnings that popup that you have a virus and tell you that you should/must install the offered software/scan are scams, be sure to research before you install keeping in mind that they are very good at getting themselves listed at the beginning of Google search results for short periods of time, especially in items marked as advertisements. ABP also helps to separate and block advertisements from actual Google search results.

You can at least suppress the page by adding the following filter to Adblock Plus, but ABP might have suppressed a page that installed it in the first place.

||9newstoday.net^

But the easiest way to block the site after installing ABP is to make sure the Status bar is displayed "Ctrl+/" to toggle on/off, then put the unwanted site into the location bar (/address bar), right-click on the ADP icon bringing up "Open blockable items" ("Ctrl+Shift+V"). Select one of the files there that is or includes the site, you will be offered several choices, and I think the choice you would want to block would be the most generic one

(*) 9newstoday.net^

If you can actually identify how you picked it up be sure to report that here and you might even have something to add to a bug report, though it is most likely that they would accept that ADP would probably be the best solution for avoidance and fixing. If there is something about it involving phishing you can report that in Help > Web forgery.

In Firefox, if you have "Adblock Plus" extension.

  1. "Ctrl+Shift+F" Preferences (or right click on ABP symbol, and choose preferences)
  2. 'Filters' menu > "Update all subscriptions"
