Thunderbird won't save drafts, despite account settings being set correctly

The drafts folder shows a number of saved drafts, but if you click through, they are not in the drafts folder. When you click on the drafts folder, the cursor just has the 'wait' circle running, even though the system is set up to save drafts to the drafts folder.
