Do you not have a menu or toolbar in your Address Book? Both offer ways to add a new Contact.

Press alt or F10 to make a menu appear, then go to View|Toolbars and tick the checkboxes.

You should now have buttons for New Contact and New Mailing List, and even more options in the menu under File|New.
