Incoming .jpg attachments display as text inline. (OK after saving)

When I enable inline display of attachments .JPGs are showing up as text (as though they are being displayed using NOTEPAD) rather than images. This is version 52.6.0 (32-bit). If I save these attachments and them open them they are indeed legitimate JPGs. What's missing from my installation and how do I fix it?
