Quick search triggers full search
While viewing a mail folder, e.g. inbox, if I use the quick search (Ctrl+Shift+K) then what's supposed to happen is this:
1. type something. Matching search results displayed. 2. type something with no search results. Message comes up saying "Continue this search across all folders: Press Enter again to continue your search for: <whatever>". 3. If you type Enter, it opens the general/global search 4. If you don't type Enter, it doesn't.
What actually happens after (2) is that *whatever* you type, if it results in no search results, the full search is opened.
This is super annoying. And I consider it a bug.
I can imagine it's deliberate along the lines of "well, we said there were no results but they've gone on typing, so they must want to do a full search because otherwise they're being stupid trying to narrow a search that already has no results. Bless the idiot user, let's help them out".
However there's a couple of problems with this:
- it's not what says will happen. It offers Enter as a way to search further - opening a completely different UX which is jarring. - Because of the search delay, if you type fast then even pressing backspace, to correct your search, results in another search key that is not found, triggering the global search. So if I quickly type "htomail", no results, ah, I see what I did, begin pressing backspace to change my typo, then as soon as I press backspace once, it searches "htomai" which also has zero results and opens global search.
Is this something that can be configured, or is there somewhere I can report a bug?

Could you perform a test for me? Please restart Thunderbird in Safe Mode and then test to see if you get the same issue.
Are you using the 'Cardbook' addon ? If no, what addons are you using?
What OS are you using Windows, MAC, Linux ?

I'm using 78.10.2 which is the latest version. I selected a folder and typed a load of nonsense so nothing would be found and got the pop message you mentioned, but I can backspace, type, space, backspace to add remove what I had typed.
I finally managed to get it to do as you say, but I had to be using crazy speed where I kept pressing a key ffffffffffffffffff and then backspacing fast by holding down and repeating this rapidly more than half a dozen times to invoke it. I probably confused the poor thing.
I remember the case/link you mention and it does sound exactly the same.
i'll check to see if there is a bug report for this.
Yeah, I do type fast but can't believe it's that fast. I can send you a video if it helps?

It would help if you could create short video and post the information into the bug report I mentioned. You would need to register. Just above my first posting of issue, is the 'Attachments' option, the drop down on it offers the 'Attach new file' button.

I've added it to the bug, and here. Thanks.

@Toad-Hall yes, you're right, it doesn't happen in safe mode, and I am using Cardbook. (Also, I'm on Ubuntu.)
Disabling Cardbook (and restarting) fixes it. Thanks for your time.
