Google is asking for me to enter password but won't accept. Is this related to their verification procedure and how can i resolve it?

Most likely yes, its the verification process. If it is you might have received an email about it in the last week or 2.
You have to go to your gmail account and then "manage your google account". Once there search for "Security" in the left side and then app passwords on the center. Follow the steps to generate an app password.
In your thunderbird use the app password instead of your gmail password and save it. Also send a test email and check if it also asks for the password. If so use the same.
Now your thunderbird should be able to receive emails.
Instead of using an app password with normal password authentication, the recommended method is to set the authentication on the incoming and outgoing servers to OAuth2 in Account Settings, then enter the account password in the OAuth window when asked to allow TB access. Cookies must be accepted in TB Preferences for OAuth to work.
