MacOS won't open web browsers from application panel - other than Safari - while using Command-Tab buttons

Hi. Running MacOS Big Sur on my 2019 iMac.

My preferred browser is Firefox, but despite using command-tab as a keyboard shortcut for switching applications, when I stop on the Firefox logo (and the same applies to Chrome when I try it), those apps won't directly open. Unlike all other apps I'm running on my computer (e.g., MS Office, Zoom, Messages, etc.), the non-Safari browser apps won't directly open. I'm forced to go into the dock on the bottom of the screen and actually click on Firefox or Chrome to open those apps. A minor inconvenience, but it's enough to be bothersome as it's an extra step while I'm trying to work quickly/smoothly.

Does anyone have similar experiences and suggested fixes (besides switching to Safari)? Thanks!
