Firefox user profile resets to a blank profile even though I have set my personalize profile to be the default

I updated firefox and now when I open the web browser it opens as a blank new user. I have learned I can find my profile (which I have named) by searching About:profiles. Then I can reset my personalized user profile to be the default. However, this doesn't stick. If I close Firefox and reopen it it is blank again. It's driving me crazy.
