Can I upgrade my Firefox without it updating the version of Java on my computer?

I am using Firefox version 3.5.19.

I use browser-based software that will not work correctly if the version of Java is greater than 1.6.07. One tome I upgraded my Firefox and it also upgraded my Java without my knowledge and the software didn’t operate properly. I had to uninstall Firefox and Java and install earlier versions.

I am now getting warnings that my version of Firefox is vulnerable and I should upgrade. I do not want to upgrade if it also installs a new version of Java. Is it possible to upgrade my Firefox without it affecting the version of java on my computer?
