Firefox stopped autofilling passwords and asking to remember, why?

since about 3 builds firefox stopped autofilling passwords and user names in all websites, also stopped asking me if it should or shouldn't save a password on a newly visited website. I've seen this before on the forums but haven't found a feasible solution. if indeed there's already a solution I apologize in advance for clogging the support forum. thanks.
