Ffound screensaver windows 8.1

On Windows 7, running the ffound screensaver which shows a stream of images, it is possible to click on an image and then be taken by FF to the image on the ffound website.

Using Windows 8 the same action produces the "Firefox is already running but is not responding error".

I have followed all the advice for addressing this error but nothing fixes this problem.

Does anyone know what it is that has changed to cause this changed behaviour? Has anyone been able to fix it?
