Google Android High Precision GPS use on Firefox vs Chrome

Yesterday, I was in the Palm Desert, CA and La Quinta areas with my T-Mobile phone, an Android device. I was using both Chrome and Firefox, one at a time, being sure to have closed the other. I experienced a problem where Firefox reported my location as some 150 miles away in Los Angeles area, while the same phone in the exact same location while using Chrome showed my location correctly (Chrome also matched Google Maps location). Both Chrome and Firefox are enabled to use use high precision GPS.

The first two images show ridiculous distance variance.

I also have an older Android phone I also tried the same experiment on with it, but I saw that Firefox did not have that same problem on the older Android phone.

My question is did Google change something or did Firefox? Google has demonstrated itself to be so dishonest and untrustworthy in recent years that if I were to bet, I would bet that Google in its latest release of Android is blocking Firefox from receiving accurate coordinates or passing essentially garbage coordinates to Firefox.

I later ran a similar test from the FedEx on 111 in Palm Desert. The third screenshot from GoogleMaps shows my location in Palm Desert on Hwy111. However, Firefox showed the nearest course to be in Santa Ana. Google Chrome showed it within a mile.

Hello!

Long time user of Firefox and Firefox browser on Android. I've had it on multiple phones so naturally I installed it when I got a new phone, Moto edge 20, and it worked like a charm.

After using it for a month or so Firefox suddenly had disappeared from my new phone. It somehow removed itself while locked and unused.. I have no idea how that happened. So I tried to re-install but it simply stops after the download & install process, in Play Store, and the install button appears again. I've not been able to re-install it since it happened several months ago.

Tried Firefox beta, which installed, but crashes a couple seconds after launch..

This problem has kept annoying me for months now: When I load my youtube subscriptions page on my tablet, Firefox keeps kicking me over to the mobile site (m.youtube.com instead of www.youtube.com) which is bloody annoying. Changing the m to www manually will do me no good, it gets changed back to m as soon as i hit enter. Turning on the desktop site switch in the menu will only work temporarily, it's only a matter of time before I get kicked back to the mobile site. It's not a question of IF it happens, it's a question of WHEN it happens.

The thing is that this ONLY happens with youtube in Firefox on my tablet, but not in Firefox on my phone, my computer or other websites, and it does not happen in opera on the tablet either. That tells me that it is a Firefox problem (maybe some setting?), not a YouTube problem.

So why does Firefox do this, and how can I stop it?

PS. It's the latest version of Firefox on a galaxy tab s2 running Android 7. No, updating to a newer version of Android is not an option :-( Thanks, Samsung!

The issue where Firefox on Android does apparent background restarts is still occurring in the most recent release builds.

This was first discussed in the now archived topic https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1379604

It is 100% reproducible. Steps:

1. Go to https://www.theguardian.com/uk 2. Open in background tab one or two internal links to stories in that website 3. Firefox is hang for e.g. 40s then reloads from scratch all open tabs including to other sites 4. The device will behave as if it was recently restarted with all other apps doing UI refresh activity when you next access them

The repro steps are truly simple.

Should we raise this as an iss with the website instead? e.g. Chrome does not and never has had a problem like this on that website.

Cheers,

108.2.0 (Build #2015925643), 78718ba91+ AC: 108.2.0, 9174b4e74f GV: 108.0.2-20230104165113 AS: 95.0.1
