Why does Thunderbird try to enable end-to-end encryption with almost everyone even though I don't have keys corresponding to them?

Hey all -

Pretty much what the title specifies. I've got a locally-installed copy of Thunderbird here, and it is somewhat erratic in who it tries to send email messages to encrypted - sometimes it merely signs them (which is the expected, desired behavior), and other times, it assumes that I want to encrypt messages between me and this correspondent. One problem: I literally do not have any GPG/PGP keys on my system for anyone but myself, and I don't even have "Require encryption by default" selected in my account's "End-To-End Encryption" settings under "Account Settings".

For what it's worth, I'm very glad that Thunderbird has added GPG/PGP encryption by default, but so far Enigmail's implementation worked very well. It would automatically - and correctly - identify if you HAD a user's public key, and then encrypt correspondence between you and them, and otherwise (if lacking a corresponding public key) would simply sign emails. This worked perfectly for years. Hopefully I'm just missing a setting, but it'd be nice to get this to stop.

I've attached some screenshots with examples of what I'm getting, and what my settings are.

I followed instructions posted on a TB fourm on how to generate an app password in order for my TB to work with AOL. I'm receiving mail in Thunderbird but can't send. I suspect that I may not have followed the instructions completely and would like to start over. Do I need to delete the AOL generated password on AOL and create a new one or just create a new one for the outgoing server? Would appreciate any help! JD

Hi- when I open TB, I get the enter password box. I found out today that if I leave blank & then hit cancel or the red X, Thunderbird still opens. How can I change that unless I enter the correct password? The password box opens after that to ask for my pop.gmail.com password, which is fine. I can see that entering that password retrieves new, unread messages & permits me to compose & send new mail, etc....

I am trying to send encrypted emails. I added the public key of the recipient in openPGP key manager and set them Trusted.

From "write message" windows, if i click on security--> view security infos, it shows the status ok for the receipient.

However, when i click sent button, it fails. The error console is logging "no suitable subkey found for encrypt", however as you can see from the screen shots, the encryption subkey is there.

If i sent signed emails (with my private key) or unencrypted emails, Thunderbird works fine. Also encrypting files externally with Kleopatra (using the same public keys) also works fine.

I am using Thunderbird v 91.5.0 64-bit on Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon and kernel version 5.13.0.27.

Any help is appreciated.

I have 3 email addresses for family members thru aol/ Verizon. I had to get a new server password from them a few weeks ago, now whenever I try to send email it always asks for that accounts password. I have updated my SMTP settings to save password. For some reason it only saves the last smtp setting for all accounts. So if I send from aolsux@verizon.net when my son sends from spongebobrules@verizon.net the aolsux info is in his SMTP settings. Thanks for your help, and no, they are not our real email addresses

All I want to do is change my Thunderbird password.

Doing a www search for that topic = every site's information I've found tells one to 1) click on drop-down TOOLS and then OPTIONS (enroute to changing the password), or 2) pull-down MENU and then click on OPTIONS (same story . . . )

Well, there's only one itty-bitty problem: There is NO "OPTIONS" option in at either location.

OK.

So where's the magic? Can only conclude that other people are seeing things I'm not permitted to see . . .

Thank you.

I have Verizon.net e-mail. Tbird 91.5.0 64 bit Win 10. A few days ago, 1-18-22, I can no longer access this account thru Tbird, the password does not work any more. I do not have my password stored since I prefer to enter it manually everytime I start Tbird. Since AOL now controls verizon.net e-mail accounts I can get to the e-mail there. I have tried the app password thru AOL and that password when entered into Tbird will work for that session until I close Tbird for the night. What am I missing? What can I do ? Please help I am 67 and depend on this daily.

Yesterday, Thunderbird was automatically updated to 91.4.1 on my Windows 10 laptop. Now my gmail accounts fail to authorize. When I start Thunderbird, a splash screen appears "Secure connection failed". The title bar on the splash screen says "Enter credentials for xxxxx@gmail.com on imap.gmail.com" (xxxxx represents my username). There is nowhere to enter credentials as far as I can see. I know for sure that the password I used was correct as I just signed in to gmail using a browser. Please help!

Is it possible to read in Thunderbird email messages encrypted with "Office 365 Message Encryption" ?

When such email is received, it says that:

"XXX has sent you a protected message. " Then there is a blue "Read the message" which takes me to Office 365 OWA and from there I can read the email. But I was wondering if it's possible to read it directly from Thunderbird?

I'm using Thunderbird 91.5.0 (32-bit) with IMAP connection to outlook.office365.com

Thanks

I've been using Thunderbird for years. I have recently added mails to my mobile phone, but want to continue receiving my mails on my laptop, as that is where I will send out from. Lat few days I have not been able to send mails, and can now not even access my mails, and get a message mentioning imap login failed. I do not know what that means, nor am computer savvy. Is there an easy way to fix this, or if not, do I lose all my mails if I decide to stop using this mailbox in future

I will not be able to access answers you send on this mail, which makes the problem even more irritating
