Thunderbird says "Unable to locate mail spool file."

I am trying to use Thunderbird to get gmail. First attempts failed but going to gmail (webmail) I find Thunderbird is a "less secure APP". Set Gmail to work with "less secure APP" but now I get "thunderbird cannot locate spool file" I deleted Thunderbird and reinstalled it . Now I still get "Thunderbird cannot locate spool file" Any advice gratefully received!
