Trying to run ./firefox (5.0.1) on Kubuntu 10.04 LTS results in "exec: 392: ./firefox-bin: not found".

I have Firefox 4 running successfully on a core i7 norebook but wanted to run version 5. After downloading the firefox-5.0.1.tar.bz2 file I extracted it to ~/firefox and tried to run the thing from there. It fails with the error message:

exec: 392: ./firefox-bin: not found

but the file firefox-bin is most definitely there.
